Hello, I’m Susan Howarth, your host at Wellwood Lodge. I’ve had the pleasure of managing this beautiful property since 2010, carrying on the family business that my parents established back in 1994.
I hold a BA Hons degree in International Tourism Management with French and have extensive experience in the hospitality industry, having worked in hotels, restaurants, and spent over 6 years in tourism for local government. I took voluntary redundancy when our local Tourist Information Centres in Matlock and Matlock Bath closed due to the rise of online bookings and mobile technology. This coincided with the birth of my son Thomas in June 2010, and provided the perfect opportunity to take over the family business.
Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to modernizing and enhancing Wellwood Lodge. My background in tourism has given me valuable insights into what makes a memorable holiday experience. I’ve overseen numerous improvements including installing a bespoke Neville Johnson Oak staircase and oak flooring, redecorating all bedrooms (including adding a magnificent 4-poster bed in the ensuite bedroom), renovating the lounge with local scenic photographs, adding electric garage doors, creating a new utility room, upgrading to larger beds, and completing a total reroof to improve comfort in the attic bedrooms.

During the 2020 Covid lockdown, when our business was temporarily closed, I used the time to transform our cellar rooms – leveling uneven floors, treating the walls, and adding hard-wearing flooring throughout to create a games room area for guests to enjoy.
I live locally and am committed to maintaining Wellwood Lodge to the highest standards. My philosophy is simple: I present this house as I myself would like to find a holiday home – with attention to quality, comfort, and all the little touches that make a stay special.
When I’m not busy managing the property, I enjoy exploring the beautiful Peak District. One of my favorite spots is the Goyt Valley , where you can often find me hiking and taking in the stunning scenery.
I’m always happy to share my local knowledge to help you make the most of your stay in this wonderful part of Derbyshire. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any recommendations or assistance during your visit.
I hope you enjoy your stay at Wellwood Lodge!
Susan
