Buxton: The Elegant Spa Town

Visiting Buxton in the Peak District

Set in the heart of the Peak District at an elevation of 1,000 feet above sea level, Buxton is one of England’s finest historic spa towns and proudly holds the title of the highest market town in England. This charming destination seamlessly blends Georgian elegance with contemporary culture, creating a unique atmosphere for visitors year-round. The town’s rich history as a thermal spa destination dates back to Roman times when soldiers would bathe in the warm spring waters, believed to have healing properties. These same waters can still be sampled today at St. Ann’s Well near the Crescent.

With the recent £70 million restoration of its iconic Georgian Crescent and historic Pump Room, Buxton has entered an exciting new chapter while preserving its rich heritage. The magnificent Crescent, designed by John Carr of York and inspired by Bath’s Royal Crescent, now houses a luxury spa hotel allowing visitors to experience the town’s waters just as the Georgian aristocracy once did. The renovated Pump Room serves as both a visitor center and exhibition space celebrating Buxton’s spa heritage.

The town offers plenty of cultural activities throughout the year, from internationally acclaimed festivals to intimate performances in historic venues. In addition to the famous Buxton Festival, visitors can enjoy the Buxton International Festival of Opera, Music and Literature, the Buxton Well Dressing Festival, and numerous other cultural events that animate the town’s calendar. The magnificent Pavilion Gardens regularly host craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and antique shows, adding to the town’s vibrant atmosphere.

While maintaining its peaceful, sophisticated character and distinctly unhurried pace, Buxton offers all the amenities of a modern town, including excellent dining options ranging from traditional tearooms and pubs to contemporary restaurants showcasing local Derbyshire produce. The historic Cavendish Arcade, housed in the former thermal baths, now contains a selection of independent boutiques and specialty shops. Perfectly positioned to explore the natural wonders and historic treasures of the Peak District, Buxton offers visitors an ideal base for discovering everything this spectacular region has to offer,
