Home to the Cavendish family since 1549 and the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth stands as one of England’s most impressive stately homes. Often referred to as “the Palace of the Peak,” this magnificent house sits in perfect harmony with its landscape, the golden-hued building reflected in the River Derwent that flows through the 1,000-acre park designed by legendary landscape architect Capability Brown.
The house offers visitors the opportunity to explore over 30 opulent rooms that showcase the evolution of English interior design over four centuries. From the magnificent Painted Hall with its baroque ceiling depicting the life of Julius Caesar, to the State Apartments prepared for a royal visit that never materialised, each room tells stories of power, taste, and changing fortunes.
What distinguishes Chatsworth is its remarkable art collection, accumulated over 16 generations of the Cavendish family. The collection encompasses everything from ancient Roman sculptures to Renaissance drawings, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Reynolds, and Lucian Freud.
The formal gardens extend over 105 acres and represent 500 years of careful development. The spectacular Emperor Fountain shoots water to a height of 90 metres, while the Cascade creates a mesmerising stepped waterfall effect. Approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Buxton.
