Combs Moss Walk is a challenging 9-mile hike direct from the property. Venture into the Lightwood Eco Area, where the path ascends the hillside, rewarding you with breath-taking views of Corbar Cross and Solomon’s Temple behind you. Once you cross over the stile, please note this is a dog-free zone. Turn right and follow the permissive path that skirts the edge all the way around Combs Moss. Here, a stunning panorama unveils itself, featuring glimpses of a nearby quarry and the village of Dove Holes.
The path takes you past the trig point on Black Edge (507 m), and continues until you reach the gritstone crest of the escarpment that strikes a captivating presence. This vantage point provides sweeping vistas over Chapel en le Frith and the picturesque Combs Reservoir. On a clear day, the cityscape of Manchester can be discerned on the horizon. Further along, you’ll encounter Castle Naze, an area once home to a formidable hill fort dating back to the Iron Age, but now known for its dramatic gritstone escarpment that calls to climbers from all over. For those wishing to climb, access is more direct from Chapel en le Frith.
Continuing on the undulating moorland path around the edge of Combs Moss, you’ll be led on a circuitous route back towards Buxton and over Combs Head. At the crossroads bear left and you will soon see a wind turbine and then Corbar Cross in the distance. Stay on the moorland pathway, cross the stile over the wall and head to the cross and Corbar Hill trig point (437 m). Upon reaching the cross, descend through the woodlands using the Corbar Woods walk and turn left down Corbar Rd and back to the comfort of our meticulously restored 1890s property.
Please note, this walk is over moorland and does have a tendency to be very boggy in places so correct, waterproof footwear is essential for maximum enjoyment.
