This quintessentially English market town, positioned on the banks of the River Wye, is perhaps most famous for its Bakewell Pudding – a delicious dessert allegedly created by accident in the 1800s when a cook misinterpreted a recipe. The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop and Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop both claim to be the home of the authentic recipe. Note that the Bakewell Pudding (a jammy, almond-flavoured egg custard in pastry) is distinct from the more widely known Bakewell Tart.
Bakewell charms visitors with its handsome stone buildings, medieval five-arched bridge, and historic 12th-century church of All Saints. Narrow streets lined with independent shops selling crafts, antiques, and specialty foods make it a delightful place to browse. The central square comes alive every Monday for the traditional market, operating since at least 1330.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the riverside walks along the crystal-clear River Wye and the Monsal Trail – a popular traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists following the former railway line through limestone dales. Conveniently located near Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, Bakewell makes an excellent base for exploring these stately homes. Approximately 25 minutes’ drive from Buxton.
