Venture beneath the surface to explore Poole’s Cavern, a magnificent natural limestone cave system that has fascinated visitors for centuries. Named after an outlaw who allegedly used it as a hideout, this ancient natural cathedral contains spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal formations that have formed over hundreds of thousands of years.
Expert guides lead 45-minute tours through spacious, well-lit chambers, bringing the geological processes and historical stories to life. Highlights include Derbyshire’s largest stalactite, known as the “Flitch of Bacon,” and the unique ‘poached egg’ stalagmites with their vibrant orange coloration. The final chamber, Mary Queen of Scots’ Chamber, reaches an impressive height of 40 feet and features dramatic limestone formations.
Above ground, Buxton Country Park offers 100 acres of woodland and meadow with trails suitable for all abilities. The most popular route ascends through Grin Low Wood to Solomon’s Temple, a Victorian folly built in 1896, offering spectacular views across Buxton. For the adventurous, the Go Ape tree-top adventure course provides an exhilarating experience among the canopy.
The visitor centre includes interactive displays, a gift shop, and a café serving homemade refreshments. Contact: +44 (0)1298 26978 for tour times and booking information.
