One of my favourite walks is the Shining Tor Walk in the picturesque Goyt Valley. This version includes Shooters Clough, St Joseph’s Shrine and a diversion to Errwood Hall. Starting from the Pym Chair car park, this invigorating six-mile trek offers a brilliant outdoor experience with some of the most stunning vistas the region has to offer. As you begin the ascent up Shining Tor, you’ll be grateful for the well-maintained flagstoned path that guides you over the expansive moorland.
As the highest hill in Cheshire, Shining Tor promises unparalleled panoramas, and on a clear day, you can see Macclesfield and might even catch a glimpse of the distant cityscape of Manchester and Welsh Hills. Keep a keen eye out for the iconic Jodrell Bank Observatory peeking through the horizon. The path turns to the left, following the robust stone wall and continues until you reach the footpath sign. Take the left pathway signed Errwood, signalling the descent into the serene valley below. The pathway unfurls spectacular views of Errwood Reservoir, its shimmering waters providing a stunning contrast to the surrounding landscapes. Heather blooms in vibrant purple hues during the summer, adding an extra layer of majesty to the scenery.
Take the footpath through a gate in the wall signposted Shooter’s Clough and follow this pathway across the river stepping stones and up the other side before crossing a footbridge and taking the footpath to Errwood Hall. Retrace your steps and then continue along the path for approximately a mile, where you’ll find yourself drawn to St Joseph’s Shrine, a magical and mystical stone built refuge that invites a moment of reflection. From there, the trail meanders across the hillside, concluding with a brief walk by the roadside before returning the car park.
